Christianity and the Atonement
The Meaning of Atonement
●Atone (Kipper)to wipe away, wipe clean, or purge
The Need for Christ’s Atonement
●Expiation–God’s act of removing the guilt and sin of man by Christ’s suffering
punishment in the sinner’s place (Rom. 3:25-26; 1 Pet. 3:18).
●Forgiveness and Remission–Divine absolving of the sinner of his sinful offense
made possible through the Cross (Eph. 1:7; 1 Pet. 1:18-19).
●Justification–the declaration or proclamation of a person as righteous, that is,
possessing a right standing before God (Rom. 3:24).
●Penal–God’s punishing of Christ was the expression of God’s judicial authority
which demanded that sin must be paid for (Gal. 3:13).
●Propitiation–Godward effect of the value of the cross; God is propitious in that
Christ’s sacrifice allowed God to execute His love and mercy for sinners without
denying His justice, by fulfilling His judgment on the transgression against His will by
sinful man (Rom. 1:18; 3:25-26; 4:15; 5:9; 1 Jn. 2:2; 4:10).
●Reconciliation–Manward effect of the value of the Cross; the establishment of
peace between God and man by the quenching of God’s wrath and the changing of
man’s anti-God disposition (2 Cor. 5:16-21).
●Redemption and Ransom–Christ’s sacrifice provided a payment of a ransom price
for the debt owed by man to God (2 Pet. 2:1; Rev. 5:9-10; 1 Cor. 6:19-20).
●Satisfaction–God’s acceptance of Christ’s payment on the Cross (Acts 20:28).
●Vicarious-the substitutionary effect of the Cross; i.e. in the place of sinners (Gal.
3:13; 4:5).
